Jazzy Solanki had a hard start to life, found with her twin siblings and her dead mother. Since then she has worked hard, reaching the rank of Detective Sergeant in Police Scotland. However, after an altercation, she has been demoted to DC and sent to work in Livingstone with a poor DI and a difficult partner. However, when a gruesome murder is committed, Jazzy sees the links to her own life and becomes convinced that she is the target of a plan.
Having read some of Mistry's past booksI know that she is great at putting together a complex plot but here I really enjoyed the cat and mouse aspect. The characters are fantastic especially Queenie and the broad Scots accent really works well. What I especially liked was the fact that the door is open for the sequel, there is no clear ending. This book gripped me.… (mais)

Detective Constables Jasmine (Jazzy) Solanki and Annie (Queenie) McQueen have recently been demoted and put on the D (Dunce) Team in Inverness. Jazzy has learned that telling the bald truth isn't always the best line of action and avid knitter Queenie is famous for "Needlegate". In The Blood Promise, Liz Mistry has teamed two diametrically opposite characters into a strong serial killer mystery.

Although I did like the story, I did have problems with the two main characters. At first, Queenie was in-your-face comic relief with her non-stop knitting, flatulence, and garlic breath. When some of her backstory was revealed, I found that I could accept Queenie, but I still didn't like her.

On the other hand, Jazzy, daughter of a Hindu mother and Muslim father, is portrayed as an often brilliant investigator who doesn't always know when to keep her mouth shut. Although my heart went out to this character as her tortured backstory was revealed, she had so many instances of PTSD meltdowns, I wondered how she could be such a good police officer. She experienced so much angst that it often bogged down the pace of the story. (I also wondered how two disgraced and demoted officers could so quickly be put in charge of major parts of the murder investigation.)

The different angle to an often-tired serial killer investigation certainly made it interesting, and I did like the setting. Even though I did have problems with the two main characters, I find myself wanting to read the next book in the series. With the origins of so much of Jazzy's troubled past revealed, I really want to know how she'll behave in a new investigation.

The first book in a series introducing DS Gus McGuire and once you have read this one you will be dying to read the others.
A series i would highly recommend.
Fast paced, entertaining and some wonderfully colourful characters you will want to follow through their stories.

End Game by Liz Mistry starts out with an 11-year-old girl with the pouts, she wants to go to the same high school that her friends go to, and she tries to convince her parents to no avail. As she sits under a tree and pouts, her little sister comes to make nice with a bag of treats, her sister returns to the house when all of a sudden a bag is put over her head and she is abducted.

A phone call to the police alerts them of a murder. DI Nikki Parekh and Di Sajid Malik, arrive in a posh neighborhood to a horrific scene. Four people have been murdered, A father, mother, son, and daughter have been stabbed repeatedly. They are all seated at the table, having recently been playing Monopoly. Four dead people but 5 seats were used. 5 glasses at the table where is the fifth person? Nikki and Sajid now have the daunting task of sifting through the clues and talking to neighbors, business partners of the deceased, classmates to the son and daughter, etc.

In alternate chapters, the story tells of child abductions that have been and are happening. The reader finds out pretty much in the middle of the book that these children are being abducted for sex, kept hidden, and abused. This was a hard part for me to read as it would be for anyone.

This book is #6 but with the narration from Nikki, the reader is brought up to speed on all the characters in the novel. This book is definitely character-driven, with the good guys and the bad. You really don't have to have read the previous five books in the series to come up to speed on who is who and their past.

I will most likely at some point read the previous books as there are some events and characters that I am curious about. I love a good murder mystery and this one is right up there with the best. The book had me immersed from start to finish!

I give it 5 stars
