This was a pretty quick little read. I love The Big Bang Theory, and I knew a little bit about Kunal Nayyar, so I thought I'd pick it up, and I wasn't disappointed. Nayyar tells anecdotes from his own life, from childhood to television stardom, and makes himself sound like a pretty regular guy. He has had successes and failures, is confident and unsure in equal measure--all qualities that I and any reader can probably relate to. I'm not sure if it was because of the title, but I heard his voice in my head the whole time I was reading, and it felt like he was just sitting with me, telling stories and sharing snippets of wisdom. A nice effect.

This author of this book is better known as Raj from Big Bang Theory. This delightful book focuses on his childhood, dating life, and pre-Big Bang theory career, so don't expect a lot of juicy stories on the Big Bang theory TV show.

it is only lately that I have been catching up on Big Bang Theory. Often I watch older shows while rocking my baby to sleep for her second nap of the day. Yes, I have sang the warm kitty song to her!

This book earns 4.25 stars in my book. I do get the idea there are a lot of similarities between Raj and Kunal's personalities. I've recently added Mayim Bialik (Amy or also known as Blossom) blog to my reading list and Kunal is entertaining enough for me to follow him if he a a blog.

It seems the writers of The Big Bang Theory merely looked at Kunal Nayyar and wrote him as Rajesh Koothrapalli.
I have always admired the Indian culture from old movies, I see how the shows and movies of Hollywood has inspired the citizens of many countries to go out and be a star.

Never thought he would be so humble and down to earth. And I am glad that he is proud of his roots no matter where he is. An honest account of life.

I was hoping for more stories about the cast and set of Big Bang Theory, but Nayyar's memoir focused more on his childhood and personal life. It was still interesting to read. It also wasn't as funny as I had hoped.½

I must admit, I read it while I had a cognitive injury. I couldn't focus and had trouble understanding. I was searching for something to occupy my brain that I could actually follow and this book succeeded where others failed. The writing was quite simple and each story was relatively short. This does not mean I didn't enjoy his stories, learn a few things, and laugh along with him. However, I could read this book because he is not a complicated writer.

This makes for a light-hearted read that's great for somewhere you have trouble focusing, like travel or a commute.

This was just delightful. I listened to it while I swam and it was perfect except for the really funny parts which are difficult to handle while you are under water. He tells a good story. It's not a memoir but just a collection of good stories. And he does the reading as well and is, no surprise really, excellent at it. This was 5 hours of good swimming.

Pro: family vignettes & story about his Big Bang Theory audition process

Con: awkward/TMI college vignettes

Overall: quick read, fun enough

If there ever was a book that was meant to be enjoyed as an audio, it’s this book. Superbly performed by the author, if you read the print version, you missed out. Kunal Nayyar shares a variety of stories about himself and his life in India and in the United States. Some are humorous, some are sad, and some are informative, but all are entertaining. Self-deprecating and honest, Kunal relays stories about coming to the United States for college, about his time in drama classes, and about several of his auditions and the parts he didn’t get. Also included is the anguish he felt while waiting to hear back from the producers of Big Bang Theory. Kunal also includes some good advice in this collection of stories; some he garnered from his father and some he acquired through his own life experiences. He comes across as a person you’d like to have as a friend, and considering there were at least a thousand people at his wedding to a former Miss India, there must be a lot of people who feel the same way. Enlightening and entertaining, this memoir shows that Kunal is a gifted author as well as an actor.

Nayyar, an actor on The Big Bang Theory, tells little stories about himself and his journey from India to university in America to a MFA in acting to the job that made him famous to his marriage. (That sentence is a little wonky, but it is late and I am tired. Sorry, gentle reader.)

I chuckled several times, and yet Nayyar's writing is not planned comedy or pretentious either. He seems like a really good guy and very wise for his age. I gave him an extra half point for being so...mature? Loving? Admirable? I can't find the right word, but it's a good book any way.

Yes My Accent is Real: and Some Other Things I Haven’t Told You

I Picked Up This Book Because: Celebrity books have been my not so guilty pleasure for the past few months. Even though I don’t watch his show his book was highly recommended by a friend.

The Story:

I loved this book. Going in I didn’t know Kunal from Adam but I’m so glad I got to know him a little bit. His stories are so intriguing. From growing up in India to moving to the states, from adjusting to school in America to starting his acting career, from his friendship with Zico to his marriage I was engrossed in every minute. The story with his dad, brother and the mouse was so close to being my favorite until he talked about meeting his wife (and forgive me I’ve forgotten her name). The mouse story was just plain hilarious but the way Kunal speaks about his wife takes my breath away. I’m in awe of his depth of feeling for her and his ability to express it in words.

I honestly hope as his life and career progress he chooses to write another book and share those next chapters with the world.

The Random Thoughts:

4.5 Stars½

The actor who plays Raj in "The Big Bang Theory" writes a - well, not exactly a memoir, because as he says, "I'm not a politician...or a Kardashian" - but a collection of stories and memories from growing up in New Delhi to coming to America for college to getting interested in theater and deciding to make a career out of acting. It's quirky, heartfelt, funny, and I really enjoyed hearing the author himself read it: and yes, his accent is real.½

This memoir was a nice look in how Kunal Nayyar started his life over in India and made his way over to the US and on to the Big Bang Theory. My favorite section of the book was his years in college. Though the parts later on how he met his wife, plus the details on his wedding were quite lovely as well. I wish I could remember more, but I didn't realize I hadn't reviewed this book until it started getting a bit fuzzy.

Even though this does include Kunal's experiences that lead up to his role on The Big Bang Theory, this is mostly a coming-of-age story and a very sweet memoir. I love Kunal's reflections about his family and India, as well as the lessons he's learned throughout life. His descriptions of Indian holidays and weddings are vivid; he is a very good storyteller. There's humor throughout (sometimes eliciting a smile, sometimes a chuckle, sometimes a hearty laugh).

As a fan of The Big Bang Theory I couldn’t pass up the chance to learn more about the endearing actor who plays Raj Koothrappali, actor Kunal Nayyar.

Yes, My Accent is Real: and Some Other Things I Haven’t Told You is a collection of stories and anecdotes from his life.

It begins with stories from his childhood in India spent dreaming of kissing Winnie from ‘The Wonder Years’ and playing badminton like a champ, before moving on to his time at college in the US, his interest in acting and landing the role of Raj on the The Big Bang Theory.

Kunar also writes about his family, especially his admiration for his father, his joy at marrying his wife, and his enjoyment and respect for the cultural traditions of his country. I was a little disappointed there wasn’t more about his daily life as part of The Big Bang Theory cast though.

Kunal proves to be a sweet, genuine and self deprecating storyteller. Yes, My Accent is Real is a charming, funny and easy read.
