Foi pensando em tudo isso que Grant R. Osborne escreveu a sua obra magistral, A Espiral Hermenêutica. Ao perceber as muitas dificuldades que pastores, pregadores e estudiosos da Bíblia enfrentam ao interpretar o texto bíblico, Osborne resolveu propor uma nova abordagem à hermenêutica bíblica. Para o autor a principal premissa deste livro é a de que a interpretação bíblica gera uma “espiral” que vai do texto ao contexto, do significado original à contextualização ou significação para a igreja de hoje. Segundo ele, a espiral é a metáfora mais adequada, pois não é um círculo fechado, mas um movimento irrestrito que vai do horizonte do texto ao horizonte do leitor.
Além de dialogar com as mais recentes teorias da linguagem, bem como propor um novo método de interpretação bíblica, o autor também aprofunda questões de extrema relevância para a hermenêutica tais como: contexto histórico, padrões de retórica, análise gramatical, semântica e exegética, géneros literários, citações do AT no NT, relações entre a hermenêutica e as teologias bíblica, histórica, sistemática e homilética, e muito mais.
Outro aspecto importante é que A Espiral Hermenêutica é uma obra comprometida com a pregação da Palavra. Osborne dedica dois capítulos do livro a mostrar passo a passo como preparar um sermão que, começando com a exegese, leva em conta todas as etapas da hermenêutica.
