M. B. Parkes is Professor emeritus of Palaeography in the University of Oxford, and Fellow emeritus of Keble College. He is a Senior Fellow of the British Academy a Corresponding Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, and has been Visiting Professor at the University of Konstanz (1974 and mostrar mais 1980), James T. Hill Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota (1991), and Visiting Professor of Latin at Harvard University (1997). mostrar menos

An excellent, beautiful, thorough book. The only detriment is that the size of the pages, in order to accommodate the illustrative plates, makes the text lines unusually long. But what are you gonna do? This is the only and best history of punctuation.

This is a fascinating history of medieval handwriting. Most paleography books simply describe characteristics of handwriting. Parkes does so as well, but he focuses on the people who did the writing, and why they wrote the way they did. He examines how scripts developed from the scribes' point of view: the scripts evolved because people found the new forms easier to write, or better suited to certain tools and situations. Parkes also discusses who wrote medieval manuscripts, the kind of training they had, and the circumstances under which they wrote.… (mais)
