Until I read this book, Amy Krouse Rosenthal was known to me only as a children's book author (the really funny, talented author of such gems as [b:Duck! Rabbit!|6124878|Duck! Rabbit!|Amy Krouse Rosenthal|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266525261s/6124878.jpg|6303340] and [b:Little Oink|6012397|Little Oink|Amy Krouse Rosenthal|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1248106490s/6012397.jpg|6187619]). When I found out she'd written a book for adults, I thought it would probably be as irreverent, amusing and creative as her books for young people. I was right!

Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life is unlike most other memoirs. It's a reference book about Amy's existence made up of very short entries of completely random Amy-related information. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes poignant. Many times she shares one of those spot-on observations about life that you've never really thought about, but know instantly to be true. For example, from the entry "BOWLING" comes this reflection: "It would be difficult to convince me that leaning has no effect whatsoever on the outcome of my bowling."

This is a super adorable book that takes a totally recognizable situation--parents making their son clean up his room--and turns it on its head. Kids will giggle as clean-loving Little Oink is forced to mess up his room. (Look for this author's other books where animal parents make their kids eat candy and stay up late.) Another funny alternate-universe story with fantastic pictures.

This book's format was celebrated as revolutionary and wildly creative back in 2016. Reading it in 2023 is (for me,) like following someone on social media who chain-posts about nothing all day long.

Amy KR was a popular children's book writer and apparently delightful person but my cynical side wonders if her death at a relatively young age propelled Textbook from "mildly interesting experiment," to "fantastic book," status.

When boredom took a firm hold, I considered reading a few "bits," at a time instead of rolling through the book page after page. Then I realized that not a single 'bit,' thus far had struck me as amusing, inspiring, wise, or even universally "human," or relatable. I bailed out when Social Studies ended.

Even allowing for the change in novelty sensibilities, this was a bust for me, although I'm typically a sucker for unconventional bio/memoirs.

Transportation books are beloved by kiddos so having train cars being the students! BUT it was just kind of meh. It has Amy Krouse Rosenthal's name on it but it doesn't feel like her.....sigh. sigh. It feels like a ghostwriter wrote it. = Others will love it but again, not what I was looking for in this particular storytime.

I adore Amy Krouse Rosenthal's writing. Her books are always so engaging for her readers. It is a shame that she is gone.

"Don't Blink" is SUCH fun, but all interactive books are in my opinion. It is a great bedtime read--and good luck trying to not blink yourself. Because you will. Every time I read this book, I do. Every. Single. Time.

There are fun optical illusions in the book that engage the older reader. The illustrations are delightful in their vibrancy and animation. Honestly, this is a great book.

This was perhaps a little too minimalist in terms of word content - but pretty with a nice message.

From LibraryThing:

"This book is about two chopstick friends who are inseparable- they were best friends and did everything together. They had the same friends, went the same places, until one day, they became detached and were distraught. It wasn't until then that they realized how much more they could experience without being attached to each other. This book demonstrates the power in independence and experiencing life while not being by their friend's side constantly. This children's book is great for children between ages 5-8!"

From Librarything Reviews:

I love this book because it talks about differences yet it also talks about it being okay to be different. I also love that they talk about what each utensil is used for. I think this is a great way to teach children how to them

Spoon is feeling sad because he can't do all of the cool and exotic things that Knife, Fork, and Chopsticks can do. What Spoon doesn't realize is all of the amazing things that he can do! Spoon finally realizes that he is lucky and grateful for being just the way he is. The humorous illustrations in this story makes this a great read aloud to remind us to celebrate what makes each of us special.

The adorable picture book about picky eating has been adapted for the smallest noshers. Happy Little Pea leads a content life with Mama and Papa Pea. His only gripe is having to eat the worst thing ever for dinner-candy! As in the original, the use of white space in contrast with the bright, pea green of the main characters makes this tale visually appealing to young readers. A counting element and a twist ending will have them coming back for seconds and thirds. © Copyright 2015. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. School Library Journal:

PreS-Gr 2-Little Pea is happy. There are many things he likes to do, such as roll down hills and hang out with his friends. There is one thing, though, that he does not like, and that is to eat candy as the main course every night for dinner. He struggles through, reluctantly swallowing not just one piece but five, in order to have his favorite dessert-spinach. This simple story is a twist on the age-old admonishment that children everywhere hear each evening. The ink-and-watercolor illustrations are as spare as the text, featuring a small, yellow-green pea in a loving family. Each uncluttered page has plenty of white space. Picky eaters will enjoy the subtle humor of this topsy-turvy tale.-Wendy Woodfill, Hennepin County Library, Minnetonka, MN (c) Copyright 2010.
