Old English essay men. My favorite thing about them is they wrote articles under fake names, about people that didn't exist, and the public loved it.

Not yet read. Very pleasant to handle and handsome.
Three quarter crimson calf, gold tooling. Page edges marbled. Engravings and etchings very vigorous. High production standard. This volume bound for St Margaret's Folkestone 1903

More for dipping into than reading straight through.

This little gem of a book presents a set of essays that were printed in the "Spectator" back in the early 1700s. They bring the reader into the society of a fine old country gentleman, Sir Roger de Coverley, and many of his acquaintances. It paints a picture of one part of English life in those days and I enjoyed visiting it very much.

Eminently forgettable. Despite appearing in some polls as being one of the great works in Western drama, I found it boring.

I very much enjoyed this play - primarily because the main characters were so much more attractive in comparison to the other plays in this collection. Young Bevil is honorable and gains a great treasure by being so. Even the scheming parents end up appearing benevolent rather than scheming.

Backgrounds: On Wit. After reading these short pieces by contemporary writers and critics, I felt like I had a better understanding of how comedic plays were written and judged - what was considered well done, and what was not. Backgrounds: The Collier Controversy. Comedic theater was obviously a hot topic, judging by the accusations and defenses posed by different contemporaries regarding the value or immorality of the theater. Backgrounds: Steele and Dennis. The amazing thing about these selections is that both men are convincing in their arguments and it is clear that competing philosophies regarding comedy on the stage are being fought for rigorously. Backgrounds: Stages, Actors ... This section gives a good overview of the more technical side of the theater - the actors, the stage sets, the theater itself. My only suggestion would be more pictures or drawings - I had a hard time picturing some of the things that were described. Criticism: From Lamb to the Present There's a wide range of views on these dramas. What is most enjoyable is seeing how some of these scholars are able to make connections and find meaning in things that on the surface don't seem to be connected. Some of the arguments are more convincing than others. Overall Impressions This volume definitely gives the reader a greater sense of both the cultural situation of the time when these dramas were written, as well as a more complete appreciation of the works included in this anthology. For reviews of the dramas themselves, see the works themselves.

I was amazed, dipping into this book, not sure how it ended up in my daughter's collection, that it was a relaxing introduction to some laid back people. Kind of fun.
#125 is advice right on target for the problems the US faces today, hatred...yes hatred among political parties.

This was a textbook from my great-uncle's day. The papers were meant as witty moral observations, in fiction form, of the people and events of the Queen Anne era. Also added to this textbook were many notes and observations about the people, places and events of the time. An entertaining way to learn history.

That's comedy meaning "funny as in big Puritan collars" and not "funny ha-ha."

Presents generous selections from the Tatler and Spectator, with real context, social and literary, in which to view them. The introductory essays for each of the several sections are extremely helpful, to novices like me, and I appreciate the inclusion of pertinent contemporary and near-contemporary writing at the end of each. Together, they provide an excellent framework for understanding the full significance of the papers - not just enjoying them, which is easy. The emphasis on the role of 'commerce' of all kinds is, naturally, rather heavy.

I am not sure that this is the same book and call number listed in this citation, as it has no indication of the author's name; only that their are "questions" that are asked by a Homer K. Underwood, head of English at High School, Passaic, N.J.
