About the Author

G. Bennett Stewart, III, is a senior partner of Stern Stewart and Co. Before co-founding Stern Stewart in 1982 with Joel Stern, he was a vice president of the financial advisory arm of the Chase Manhattan Bank. The EVA management framework was developed by Mr. Stewart and his colleagues based on mostrar mais years of experience advising corporate clients on valuations, restructurings/recapitalizations, acquisitions and diverstitures, and management incentive compensation plans. He is a principal speaker at Stern Stewart's EVA seminars, and also serves as an executive editor of the firm's quaterly publication, The Journal of Applied Corporate Finance. Mr. Stewart has a M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University. mostrar menos

The foundational text on economic value added (EVA). Helped awaken this young financial analyst to the treasures of insight—and the potential pitfalls—of economic (cost of capital)-based accounting adjustments.

Unnecessarily verbose, and I still bristle at the hubris of SS in copyrighting concepts that go back to Graham and his predecessors.

The "boring" technical stuff is very educational. However, two aspects are very bothersome: first of all, the book is preachy and almost makes you think the best way to produce value is by leveraging the company to the hilt. Although the author seem to be a big fan of traditional efficient-market theories, he to turns the leverage argument into a "make the management efficient by scrambling for cash flow", and also talks of the "lead steers" that lead the market herds. Secondly, the attempt to turn EVA into a revolutionary idea is simply monumental, and - to a finance professional - unwarranted as well as out of context historically. Simply put, it is an old idea repackaged in a new way; perhaps, and with good marketing, it might be easier to sell than the traditional ideas.… (mais)
