She became an English language scholar and professor of English at what was then King's College, Newcastle. In 1955, she married Colin Strang, a professor of philosophy, with whom she had a daughter. She became Lady Strang in 1978 when her husband succeeded to his father's title of Lord Strang. Her best-known book was probably A History of English (1970).
