I'm giving this Clifford phonics book a bonus star for at least throwing in some consolation activities -- a maze, counting, a look and find -- since it wasn't able to actually tell a story.

Worried that he's eating Emily Elizabeth's family out of house and home, Clifford runs off with some carnies with a plan to win a lifetime supply of dog food.

This quick and brief adaptation of the spin-off movie from the PBS animated series also has stickers and instructions on each page in the book telling kids where to place them. In 2004, my three-year-old daughter did a pretty good job of it. I bet she could do better today.

FOR REFERENCE:

Adapted by Ruth Koeppel with illustrators Del and Dana Thompson (The Thompson Brothers) from the animated motion picture Clifford's Really Big Movie (2004), directed by Robert Ramirez, screenplay by Rhett Reese and Robert Ramirez, and starring John Ritter.… (mais)

Poor Clifford gets confused when everyone yells at him for digging holes but then wants him to dig a ditch and form a berm to protect the town library from a storm surge. A good lesson about picking the appropriate time and place.

FOR REFERENCE:

Adapted by Kimberly Weinberger and illustrators Del and Dana Thompson from the television script "Stormy Weather" by Dev Ross for the Clifford the Big Red Dog PBS Kids animated series, Season 1, Episode 8, September 13, 2000. (Note: The book's title page gives a co-credit to Bruce Talkington for the television script, but his name is not in the actual episode's closing credits, only Dev Ross.)… (mais)

I gave this book 5/5 stars because it is perfect for beginning readers. I also loved the Clifford books growing up. Clifford Can is all about the things that Clifford can do like running, hopping, and seeing. I think children will be able to recognize the pattern throughout the book and read it well. There are about a sentence to two sentences on each page and it is a fast read.
