This is the story of a Vietnamese family that immigrates to America after the Vietnam War. They have three daughters and a mother holding onto many of their old countries' traditions and superstitions. The girls are very Americanized so their are many tensions in the family. One even becomes a contestant on a "Batchelor" type reality show. It all makes for an interesting story that draws heavily on the author's heritage.

Outstanding and ambitious debut novel, liked it mostly, though it was quite a different book when it ended compared to where it started = some mixed feelings. I really liked that there is the sense of wanting to know more about these women but always being limited by what has been passed down, what will be passed down. It perhaps goes back a bit too far with some pretty incredible stories (I zoned out some in the last half of the book but enjoyed the overall spirit), but this also makes one wonder what incredible stories might be lost in one's own family history, stories that you just don't know about because your ancestors didn't talk about such things. Don't miss the author's note at the end ❤️. Lulu Lam does an excellent job with the narration as well.
