SURPRISE PUPPY! is a book from the DK Readers line that features pictures of real people. The book has 613 words and is 'Common Core Aligned'. 32 pages.

**Possible SPOILERS**

The story is about a family of four where dad brings home a large puppy one day. I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that dad tells the children that they are watching the puppy for the weekend. It's not true, as the children get to keep the puppy, but as a parent I can understand why mom and dad might cloak the trial period this way. I mean, if they find that the children aren't ready for a dog, then they have a reason to take the dog back. However, not keen on fibbing. No doubt I'm over thinking this.

** END of possible Spoilers **

What's nice about the book is the photos of the puppy. These should appeal to a lot of kids, although they might be 'weirded out' by the clunky clothes that the girl is wearing. She is so drab.

Besides being a practice reader at the beginning 2nd Grade Reading level, this book would be good for opening up a discussion about the responsibilities of owning a dog. The book emphasizes that while puppies are fun, that they have to be trained, fed, exercised and watered.

"Surprise Puppy" is a beginners book for children who are learning to read, and are also learning the text features of a book. I like how this book has identified words that may be difficult for some children, and matching pictures next to the word so the child can match with the picture. Also, I like how this has an informative aspect to it because it has some teachings of taking care of a puppy. In the book, some of the words that are 'highlighted' are basket (dog bed), puppy, chew (dog toy), and leash. Since there are also pictures next to the highlighted word, children can begin to make word and picture association. In addition, there are aspects to taking care of a puppy (taking to the vet, leaving a gate closed, having a dog/name tag, going on walks, and also knowing they are hard work). So, this book could be good for children who want a dog and need to read some books about what it is like and what could happen when having a dog.… (mais)
