L.R. (Laurali Rose) Wright, née Appleby, was born in Saskatoon, Canada and worked as a reporter for the Calgary Herald on the education and politics beats in the 1970s. When she and her husband moved to Edmonton for his work, she began writing her first novel, Neighbours, published in 1979. She wrote literary fiction before publishing The Suspect (1985), her first mystery novel, which won the Edgar Award for Best Novel. After that, she concentrated exclusively on the mystery genre except for the novel Love in the Temperate Zone (1988).
She's best known for her series featuring detective Sgt. Karl Alberg of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, set in the fictional small town of Sechelt, British Columbia, the "Sunshine Coast" of Canada. She died of breast cancer at age 61 in 2001.

Small cast, well realized setting, tightly constructed plot. Blurb on the back compared it to Rendell and Nordic noir, and rightfully so. Really hit my sweet spot, nice and short too!

Two eccentric old women, two notebooks from years ago, attempted blackmail, murder make for a fascinating case for RCMP Sergeant Alberg. Well written and characterized. I want to seek out the author's other books.

Another deftly plotted mystery in the Alberg series. These characters are the most awkward people you are likely to come across and I find it fascinating how they navigate their lives without ever telling each other the important things. Cassandra is rude AND awkward. She gets furiously mad from things like the look on Karl's face (too neutral, too cop-like, etc.). They don't connect and their relationship doesn't make sense.

Quite good!
It's set in Canada and, it seems with Canadian authors, they LOVE to give you lots of details about the path their car travels within a story ... as someone who has never been to that part of Canada it was kind of annoying ... but when they got to Saskatchewan I actually found myself saying "OMG! I think I've actually been on that highway!" and wondering if they were going to visit some of the cities I did when I visited Saskatchewan.

Either way, the story itself was very well written!
I'm going to keep the book because the mother in this story reminded me of my own mother -- she did not want children and often let me know that I was not wanted and she wished she could have run away. That's what I remember of my childhood -- my Mom telling me how much she wishes she could just leave and never look back. The mom in this book did just that.

I'm going to check my local library for other books written by this author. Quite good!
