Westerners don’t like to see pictures of people like them visibly dying; journalistically distributed images of non-Westerners dying are more often graphic and also more often anonymous than images of Westerners dying or near death; images of death and near-death have multiple meanings and are readily used to support opposing views of what is actually true. I didn’t really see why we needed a whole book on this, or why it was so important for Zelizer to keep repeating that photos show the world “as if” rather than “as is.”… (mais)
