This was my first Dick Francis book and I'm not sure if it was the best one to start with or not. I needed a book with "second" in the title, so that's why I went with this one.

Cows were as interesting as no mushrooms.
Okay, so you have to actually read the book to get this, but it really tickled me.

There's a part 40% of the way in where the man survives a hurricane, is stranded on an island and has cut up his feet. At this point, he takes a "refreshing" swim in the ocean. Hm.. I think that would be agonizing, actually.

There were times in the book where I thought the conversations were a little jumbled, especially around 48% when the man is rescued and meets this guy, then they part ways, then they meet again... go on a tour of where they are... it's all.. hodgepodge to me.

They had barely left me smiling when I had Bell exploding in trouble in my ear, almost unintelligibly full of a five-star disaster.

"Slow down, dearest Bell," I begged, hoping that what she'd just told me pretty hysterically was at least only half true. "What did you say about Glenda?"

"I /told/ you," she shouted. "Why don't you bloody /listen/?"

It goes on from there, but at this point /I/ was yelling at the guy to listen. It's not the first time he's acted like this and I can't figure out why things need repeating. Are the readers that dumb we can't work out a sentence?

Thanks to her I'd waited a long time learning the leaf-shapes of enveloping Florida bushes, and thought them a poor exchange for the rear end registration number of the visitor's car, which showed its home state unsurprisingly to be Florida.
Again, this is more amusing in context. The guy is basically keeping his eye on a place.

I didn't really make notes because there just wasn't much that was noteworthy. The kindle edition has some horrible editing, I have to say. If I'm remembering correctly, punctuation is often switched around.
