Historical

I was wondering if anyone had an idea of the title of a historical novel I read a while ago. It had some travellers attacked by a group of Indians who took some girls to their village. One of the girls was taken by the chief intended to be his slave but later became his wife. It turned out he was half American and was well versed in English language. This came handy when he had to take his wife and children back from America when they got separated by war. His name had Panther in it.

If it's a historical romance novel, it might be Silken Savage.
