I love reading original works by and about our great western heroes, and EP has published an impressive selection of them. As long as we realize that they were as adept at story-telling, sometimes embellished and exaggerated, as they were at exploring or gun fighting, we cannot help but be entertained as well as educated.

Kit Carson is perhaps the most controversial of these men because of his reputation as an Indian fighter, but he was also a mountain man, a trapper, and an Army scout.

“The savage warrior and hunter is here presented, stripped of all the decorations with which the writers of fiction have dressed him. He is seen in his ferocity and gentleness, in his rascality and nobility, in his boyhood, manhood, and old age, and in his wisdom and ignorance.” — from the Preface.

The book is well reproduced and illustrated with what the author calls “pen paintings.”

EP also reprinted in 1992 a copy of a 1968 biography of Carson containing numerous notes of an academic nature. “The record is clear that Carson was more sympathetic to the Indians in later life and that he was never an Indian hater as were so many people in his time.” - Preface to the reprint edition.

For a good balance, I would recommend reading both.

Thank you for your response. I have the 1992 EP version of Carson and was considering adding this book. I do appreciate your input.
