The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth 2014

A rollicking, action packed and easily read thriller set in the cold war. Well written, it reflects the atmosphere of the time in history when it was set. The plot revolves around a fictional attempt on the life of Charles de Gaulle. Forsyth is a master story-teller.

The book was first published in 1971, but twenty years later the Venezuelan terrorist “Carlos the Jackal” adopted his alias from what he stated was his favourite book.

There is a six page introduction by Ken Follett and multiple integrated B&W illustrations throughout the book by Tatsuro Kiuchi. It is bound in paper printed with a wrap-around design in red, blue and white, and has a red cut-out pictorial slipcase with black and gold printing. The endpapers are plain dark blue, the book has xv + 388 pages and the slipcase measures 24.8x16.9cm.

Now, FSD aficionados may be asking, "why is he publishing this Folio Archive when the Folio Society is issuing a reprint in a few weeks. Aren't the Folio Archives meant to be about out of print editions that are at lest ten years old?".
Well the answer is slightly complex.
For the last five weeks I have been wandering around the Indian Ocean from Madagascar to Mauritius and the Seychelles to Reunion. I am now on the last leg and will be home in a few days.
In order to keep the weekly rhythm of the Folio Archives going, before I left home I wrote five reviews and loaded them onto my iPad for release every week, little knowing that the FS would choose to reprint one of the books I had chosen to review.
So now you have a review of a book that was previously in high demand on the secondary market and is about to be reprinted. It will at least give you a different idea about what you are going to get, except I believe that the new edition has a different spine logo.

Now that's a holiday.
The book looks great and solidifies my interest in the reprint.
Always enjoy your archive posts.

Thank you for the great review as always. I’m not slightly jealous of your wandering around the Indian Ocean. Are you traveling by (sail)boat?
