Vincent van Gough, The Sketchbooks; A Facsimile of the Artist’s Sketchbooks in the Collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam – LIMITED EDITION 2013
This is an extraordinary facsimile reproduction done under the direction of the previous Folio Society Limited Editions editor Joe Whitlock-Blundell. It is something that would not even be contemplated by the FS today.
The collection consists of:-
- Mid-brown cloth Solander box with a paper cover letterpress printed title label and gilt spine titling, lined with hand-marbled paper by Jemma Lewis. It is a facsimile of the display box used by the Van Gogh Museum curators in 1970, 31.2x36cm.
- Sketchbook facsimile one bound in light brown vegetable parchment with ink splattered page edges, 96 pages, 12.5x7.8cm.
- Sketchbook facsimile two, quarter bound in black cloth with raised corners and black paper covers, 42 pages, 10.4x13.9cm.
- Sketchbook facsimile three bound in light brown cloth, 64 pages, 11x20cm.
- Sketchbook facsimile four bound in brown hessian cloth with hand-sewn dark brown leather edging, page edges stained brown, 88 pages, 13.7x8.9cm.
- Commentary volume by Marije Vellekoop and Renske Suijver, bound in light-brown paper with a paper cover label, 80 pages, 22.7x13.5cm.
- Looking Over the Artist’s Shoulder leaflet, Inside Van Gogh’s Sketchbooks, bound in light-brown paper with cover title label, 12 pages, 11x20cm.
- Light-brown card folder containing 14 loose leaves in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum that were previously in other sketchbooks that are now lost, 22.5x13.4cm.
- Loosely inserted letterpress printed, hand-numbered colophon.
Van Gogh carried a sketchbook with him at all times so that he could capture the moment. These sketches are miniature works of art in their own right. The sketchbooks reproduced here date from 1884 to 1890 in Nuenen (Netherlands), Paris and Auvers-sur-Oise,
The sketchbooks are reproduced with exacting fidelity including the binding, paper, stains, watermarks and even the pages that are torn. They demonstrate the artist’s ability to do a quick sketch from life that is later converted to a full colour painting in oils.
An expert commentary explains and catalogues the sketches.
The limitation was 1000 copies and it was originally priced at £395 from the Folio Society.

Thanks for the detailed overview. Not something I would ever think of owning, but it is very interesting nonetheless.
