Does the above exist in English or French?

Specifically, I was thinking of something like a Time-Life series with text, photos, maps, illustration, etc.

I have never seen such a set, but I've never loooked for such a thing. There are a few more formal histories (few photos, however), or one could assemble one's own multi-volume set on different aspects and phases of 1917-1991, with more or fewer illustrations and photos.
There are, for instance, some good museum-grade exhibit texts of almost every period of Soviet decorative arts (suprematism, the posters, war propaganda, underground art).

It's not two volumes, but I would recommend Robert Daniels' Rise and Fall of Communism. It requires a pretty fair knowledge of the events covered, but his insight is pretty good and he certainly offers unique and thorough perspectives on things. He also deals with just about everything (except women and nationalities, which I suppose is a pretty big problem).
