We love novellas-they give writers enough room to develop ideas in depth and offer readers a quick fix of entertainment. Each year, Best Short Novels gathers the cream of these longer stories-stories you might otherwise miss-in affordable volumes you can't get anywhere else. For 2006, editor Jonathan Strahan selects nine outstanding works gleaned from small press publishers and the pages of Asimov's, Fantasy & Science Fiction, and Analog. A solid but not outstanding collection.
"The Little Goddess" - Ian McDonald **** A girl who grew up as a living goddess in South Asia becomes involved in AI smuggling. "The Gist Hunter" - Hughes *** In a world where magic is returning, an investigator must learn its uses to stop a criminal. "Human Readable" - Cory Doctorow **** A couple's relationship revolves around legislation of the use of networks with emergent properties. Interesting near future view. "Audubon in Atlantis" - Harry Turtledove *** John Audubon hunts for a rare bird in an alternate history where the large island of Atlantis sits in the North Atlantic. Interesting concept, but not much happens. "Magic for Beginners" - Kelly Link **** Surreal story about adolescence and fandom. Not really my style of story, but it is well written and left me thinking about what it meant. "Fishin with Grandma Matchie" - Steven Erikson * I couldn't figure out what this was about and couldn't finish it. "The Policeman's Daughter" - Wil McCarthy ***** Questions of identity arise in a future where copies of people can be created and stored at will. "Inside Job" - Connie Willis *** A skeptic seeks to debunk a psychic who claims to be channeling H. L. Mencken. Entertaining, but nothing special. "The Cosmology of the Wider World" - Jeffrey Ford ( )
