Percepliquis is the sixth and final book in Michael J. Sullivan's Riyria Revelations series. All of the characters are brought back together for one final quest to decide the fate of Elan.

After the quick pace of the previous book I was surprised at how slow this one felt. The story follows two threads: the quest to retrieve the horn and what's going on at home while the heroes are away. The quest portion was a nice nod to Tolkien and the Mines of Moria. Still, I felt my mind wandering a lot as I read, not nearly as engaged with the story as I'd hoped. For the most part the plot goes where you expect it to. Both threads come together in the final 200 pages for an exciting finish with a couple reveals (or revelations perhaps?) at the end that were great character twists.

I loved having all the characters back together again. Myron is definitely my favorite, a wonderful blend of innocence and wisdom. Degan Gaunt is and remains an ass. I feel bad for the people he's going to rule over. He didn't display leadership quality at all. Even Magnus grew on me. Arista finally lived up to her potential as did Modina. Royce and Hadrian were their best selves and I continue to enjoy their fun banter.

Overall this was a nice ending to the series. All the loose ends are tied up and our characters are left in a good place with plenty room left open should the author decided to write more. ( )

I didn't finish. Barely began it, really.

I read the previous 5 (or 2 1/2, depending on your version), and was instantly reminded of how annoying the last book had been. For all the author's strengths, he has equal (or worse) weaknesses, and I just can't take it anymore.

The tipping point came when the Bad Guy attacked the poor fragile women, and their designated helpful knight was cut down mercilessly in front of them ... followed by one of the poor fragile women unexpectedly unsheathing a sword and being so unexpectedly brilliant that Bad Guy was dispatched instantly.

Well, nice of your to let your designated knight die, Lady.

And the author doesn't seem to realise this is a problem. There's no wrestling with one's conscience, no internal dialogue where the lady-ninja is desperate to help but (for some valid reason) has to keep hidden, nope, she just watches, waits for the knight to be slaughtered, and then (haha, the author tricked us!) kills the bad guy.

And I just ... can't. I just can't, not anymore. Not when there are so many books that bring a smile to my face or a well-deserved tear to my eye. The Murderbot Diaries. Most of Connie Willis. Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series. Top-notch middle school fiction. Little, by Edward Carey.

If you'd been 150 pages, maybe, Percepliquis, maybe. But at 700 pages, and me already grrrring by page 30, no, it's not going to happen.

Bye bye.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve! ( )

This series of books pulled me in from the very first book and would not let go. They are well written with characters that are multifaceted. I have recommended this series to all of my friends and the final book does not let you down. The ending isn't rushed, contrived or lacking. While this series is fantasy it reads like a traditional novel. I would recommend this series to readers of fantasy and those that have never tried it before. Take the plunge, it is well worth it. There is a reason that the first printing of these books sell for insane amounts of money. The new combined voluems are much more reasonable so go ahead, try them... I dare you. ( )

A very good end to a very good fantasy series. I was a bit surprised at the size of this book, easily twice that of the others, but it read the same - fast, smooth, & easily. There weren't a lot of surprises, if the reader paid attention, but that actually made it a better story. Most of the revelations made sense having been setup since early on in the series. One that did seem jarring was Royce's purchase out of prison by Arcadius. It not only undercut Royce's mystique, but it didn't make a lot of sense.

I liked the wrap up of most of the loose ends, too. A few things were a bit convenient, but for the most part I could forgive that because of the feel-good quality they left me with when I closed the book. It was a bit jarring in one case where a very new knight is suddenly winning a tournament, as if there was some time travel involved.

Overall, the book doesn't disappoint & certainly never drags for all the area & pages it covers. The Afterword was interesting to read, too. I've followed the creation of this series closer than most & wasn't too surprised by anything except some of the reader misunderstandings. Seriously, what's up with reader comprehension these days? That had to be frustrating for the author. ( )

'I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world.'
- Elton John, Bernie Taupin
