For C. G. Jung, 1925 was a watershed year. He turned fifty, visited the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and the tribesmen of East Africa, published his first book on the principles of analytical psychology meant for the lay public, and gave the first of his formal seminars in English. The seminar, conducted in weekly meetings during the spring and summer, began with a notably personal account of the development of his thinking from 1896 up to his break with Freud in 1912. It moved on to discussions of the basic tenets of analytical psychology--the collective unconscious, typology, the archetypes, and the anima/animus theory. In the elucidation of that theory, Jung analyzed in detail the symbolism in Rider Haggard's She and other novels. > RÉSUMÉ. — En 1925, alors en pleine rédaction de son Livre Rouge : Carl Gustav Jung présente une série de séminaires en anglais au cours desquels il parle pour la première fois en public de son attirance pour le spiritisme dans sa jeunesse et les expériences qu’il en eut, sa rencontre avec Freud, la genèse de sa psychologie et sa propre expérimentation de ce qu’il a appelé sa « confrontation avec l’inconscient », décrivant en détail nombre de ses rêves et fantasmes ayant joué pour lui un rôle déterminant. Il expose ensuite ses idées générales sur la typologie psychologique et les archétypes de l’inconscient collectif, s’appuyant sur des cas d’analyse et diverses discussions portant sur l’art contemporain. Il aborde notamment les éléments contrasexuels de la personnalité, l’anima et l’animus, dont il discute avec les participants aux séminaires à partir d’analyses psychologiques de romans populaires.
Les notes de ce séminaire constituent le seul écrit biographique de Jung publié à ce jour et rendent compte de manière claire et pertinente du développement de ses travaux et réflexions. Cette édition révisée est enrichie de notes additionnelles, d’une introduction de Sonu Shamdasani, éminent spécialiste de l’histoire de la psychologie et de Jung dont il fut notamment l’éditeur du célèbre Livre Rouge.
