Susan B. Anthony is a picture book biography that tells the story of a woman who fought for better education for herself and then used that education to ignite change in legislation for the rights of women in the United States. Wallner does a terrific job of describing the courage, boldness, and strength of Susan B. Anthony and the importance of her legacy as it stands today. I enjoyed this version of the biography and would encourage others to read it too. Many young girls need to see historical figures as role models. ( )

Susan B. Anthony believed that women should be treated as the equals of men. When Susan B. Anthony was 28, she left her teaching job and began battling for reform. She organized many meetings and wrote about women's voting rights. When slavery was officially abolished in the U.S., Susan B. Anthony and her partner started a magazine which pushed for the right of women and freed slaves to vote. It wasn't until 14 years after Susan B. Anthony's death that the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote, was passed. The biography began with the lack of rights that Susan B. Anthony had and then went through what she did to gain freedom for women all around the U.S. I thought this was a good story because it shows how one person can help change the lives of millions of people. I really liked this book. I remember learning about Susan B. Anthony as a child, but I didn't remember anything that she did. In this book, it explores what Susan B. Anthony did for our country, especially women. After Susan B. Anthony died, other women continued her fight. Fourteen years after her death, the nineteenth amendment was passed, and women were granted the right to vote. Failure was truly impossible. ( )

In "Susan B. Anthony", Wallner details the life of the heroic activist. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts on February 15, 1820. She had six brothers and sisters, but very strict parents that wouldn't let them enjoy typical childhood activities. She was lucky enough to have received an education, which was rare for girls at the time; however, she was still held back with her teachers refusing to teach certain subjects like math. As an adult, Susan became a teacher at a girls' school, but soon found the job to be unfulfilling. At twenty-eight, she quit her job as a teacher and became a full-time activist for women's suffrage. Many people were not happy with a woman giving speeches, especially about women's suffrage, and threats were a commonplace at her events. Wallner illustrates this well in the book, showing the enraged men with threatening objects, while the women look worried for Anthony. Susan met Elizabeth Cady Stanton during her travels, and they formed a partnership. She convinced fifty women to register to vote with her, and eventually ended up arrested, but her cause became more famous. She unfortunately did not live to see the right to vote being given to women, but her actions were monumental to the movement.
I really enjoyed this book, I feel it's perfectly written for the age range its intended for. The illustrations do a very good job of portraying emotion and action, and I appreciate that Wallner takes the time to explain words like "suffrage" to the audience. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, especially a young feminist. ( )

Susan B. Anthony was coined "The most loved and hated woman in America." She was rebellious and a advocate for women’s rights. From childhood to her adult years Susan did not settle for being inferior to men. She refused to conform to societies views of a woman and was often chastised for it. Susan pressed on and pushed for equal rights for women and slaves. Susan B. Anthony devotion to change is the reason why African American males and women can vote today. My six year old was able to follow along while reading with assistance. ( )
