McSweeney's began in 1998 as a literary journal, edited by Dave Eggers, that published only works rejected from other magazines. But after the first issue, the journal began to publish pieces written with McSweeney's in mind. Soon after, McSweeney's attracted works from some of the finest writers in the country, including David Foster Wallace, Ann Cummins, Rick Moody, Heidi Julavits, Jonathan Lethem, William T. Vollmann, and many new talents. Today, McSweeney's has grown to be one of the country's best and largest-circulation literary journals. The first McSweeney's to feature a section highlighting fiction from outside the US, Iceland in this case. I can't honestly say I recall any of these stories after nearly 20 years. ( )
Very much enjoyed Millhauser's "A Precursor of the Cinema" and the Icelandic stories at the end. Those were the highlights from this one, for sure. ( )
The first story; A Precursor of the Cinema starts off like a weird pseudo historical work that I didn't expect to become drawn into. But delving inside paintings that become moving images is a really cool idea. And I love this take on untold histories - the crazy ideas that didn't catch on... I now want to read more Steven Millhauser.
