Hendrik Groen resides in a assisted living facitlity in Amsterdam. He clearly loathes the bureaucracy and lack of transparency of management. His diary reflects his smarts, patience, kindness, integrity, loyalty to his friends, his sense of mischief, optimism, love, humor and humanity. And can't tolerate whining, disrespect, jealousy and violence in the facility and in the world. He accepts himself as imperfect and always learning. Brilliant read! I highly recommend. This novel reads like a memoir really. The entire book is in diary format as scribed by a very elderly man, Hendrik, living in a senior living facility. We learn all about Hendrik's day to day thoughts on the staff and his fellow residents. Sometimes quite witty, other times poignant, the book really transports the reader to their likely future. It's hard not to see yourself in one or two of the residents. Or to fear what they are going through. Hendrik and a small group of friends really try to band together to continue to make life worth living, and their day trips are amusing. As we begin to care for them, we realize happiness can be quite short-lived in your eighties. All in all, it was good, but not as good as [b:Olive, Again|43984883|Olive, Again|Elizabeth Strout|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1576676858l/43984883._SY75_.jpg|66502791] or [b:A Man Called Ove|18774964|A Man Called Ove|Fredrik Backman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1405259930l/18774964._SY75_.jpg|21619954], books that similarly address some of the issues surrounding aging. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

HTML:A #1 international bestseller in the vein of Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove: a funny and tender-hearted tale about friendship, love, and an old man who is young at heart. Technically speaking, Hendrik Groen is....elderly. But at age 83 1/4, this feisty, indomitable curmudgeon has no plans to go out quietly. Bored of weak tea and potted geraniums, exasperated by the indignities of aging, Hendrik has decided to rebel - on his own terms. He begins writing an exposé: secretly recording the antics of day-to-day life in his retirement home, where he refuses to take himself, or his fellow "inmates," too seriously. With an eccentric group of friends, he founds the wickedly anarchic Old-But-Not-Dead Club, and he and his best friend, Evert, gleefully stir up trouble, enraging the home's humorless director and turning themselves into unlikely heroes. And when a sweet and sassy widow moves in next door, he polishes his shoes, grooms what's left of his hair, and determines to savor every ounce of joy in the time he has left, with hilarious and tender consequences. A bestselling phenomenon that has captured imaginations around the world, The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen is inspiring, charming, and laugh-out-loud funny with a deep and poignant core: a page-turning delight for readers of any ag Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
