( ) This book made me cry, like full on sob. It was so sad, and it also scared me to death. Maggie is 11 when she is abducted and sold into sex trafficking. The reader is told in excruciating detail her experiences as she grows up in that world. It was graphic, disturbing - not a book to read if you are easily prone to melancholy. The story is compelling but it does have it downsides. It's just too long, there are huge chunks that could be edited out and it wouldn't have really impacted the story. The characters are a bit flat, the reader is not invited into their emotional core and frames of mind. Descriptions of their mental states was overly simplistic. Some situations are unrealistic, the ending is a happy one and everything is sunshine and rainbows. Good guys prevail, and the evil guys lose. Great story, could have been written better. The writing style was reminiscent of The early volumes of the Twilight saga. A bit young-adult-ish... Just not for me. ***Disclaimer*** I received the book for free through Net Galley, the views and opinions stated in this review are entirely my own. Once again Paige Dearth delivers a raw, edgy, intense novel. "One Among Us" is about 11-year old Maggie Clarke. She living a normal, happy life, until one day she is kidnapped and forced into sex trafficking. Her parents and a detective will stop at nothing to find her. Maggie will also go very far to get even with the people who ruined her life. I rooted for Maggie the entire novel. I really felt for Maggie's parents. I have a little girl and this brings to reality what can happen to her. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica
