"Surf's up! Not yet, Dude! Books are boring! Not this one! Bro and Dude have very different ideas about how to spend the day at the beach. But as Bro continues to gasp and cheer as he reads his book (Moby Dick), Dude can't help but get curious. This is a book about two frogs going surfing. But one frog is way into a book about a man trying to catch a whale (Moby Dick). This book expresses the joys of reading. ( )

A cross between a graphic novel/comic book for young readers. Bro is reading Moby Dick and having a great time while reading it. Dude thinks books are boring and wants to go surfing. As Bro tells Dude about his book, he hooks him. When he does not tell him how it ends, Dude picks up the book and reads it himself. A short, quick read that would engage reluctant readers and help them to see that books are a great way to escape into new adventures.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )

In this book there are a couple of frog friends going to the beach. One frog friend is eager to get into the water, but his buddy has his nose stuck in a book. The reading frog describes what he is reading to his friend and his friend can even picture what is happening, and by the end of the story the friend has to read the book to find out the outcome.

Reaction: This story was fun, there were not many words, but I suppose words weren't needed as the illustration stole the show.

Extension: This story could be extended to the class room by demonstrating how a book can take you anywhere. Children could reas this story in the classroom and color or draw what they frogs were imagining from their book. ( )

Cute, but not in love with -- though I have one of those kids that will read no matter what.

Newbery winner Kwame Alexander tries his hand at hi-lo picture books to promote a love of reading. What's more fun -- reading about pirates at sea or going to the beach? I can't tell you (wouldn't be cool, bro). Action-packed illustrations full of movement. Review based on galley received from the publisher via NetGalley.com. (13) ( )
