Comic and Graphic Books. Juvenile Fiction. The lovable trio from the acclaimed Lowriders in Space are back! Lupe Impala, Elirio Malaria, and El Chavo Octopus are living their dream at last. They're the proud owners of their very own garage. But when their beloved cat Genie goes missing, they need to do everything they can to find him. Little do they know the trail will lead them to the realm of Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec god of the Underworld, who is keeping Genie prisoner! With cool Spanish phrases on every page, a glossary of terms, and an action-packed plot that sneaks in science as well as Aztec lore, Lowriders to the Center of the Earth is a linguistic and visual delight. ¡Que suave… (mais)

This book is about the story of 3 friends who go on a journey to find their pet cat, Genie. Their journey takes them through the city, to a maize maze, down into the underworld, where they must pass through a knife wind, bring water to the center of the earth, and then fight the lord of the underworld. In the end they rescue their cat and make it out of the underworld in one piece. This book would be good for either 4th or 5th graders since it is longer, but it's a graphic novel, making it a little easier of a read. The book can be used to teach students about friendship and teamwork and also includes a short part about dia de los muertos.

Fun! Dizzying detail and story!

A good follow up to the "space" story, with lots of interesting scenes and action. Good puns too! (If you like puns, that is:) ( )

This book is about a Latina mechanic who goes on an adventure with her friends in the center of the earth in order to find her lost cat. This book is primarily crafted with drawings, as it is a graphic novel. This book is also a Pura Belpre award winner, and rightfully so. I would recommend this book to the 3rd-5th grade level, as it is a graphic novel type of book. Since it's a graphic novel, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to middle school aged students, as it may be a little bit too easy for them. ( )

Book two is just as much fun as book one. This time the team must travel to the center of the earth to save their cat. They must save the cat from the volcanos, the heat, a crying goddess, and a Mexican wrestler. It is all tied up with the day of the dead. This was such a fun book. I am glad they exist and that there are at least 2 more. ( )

See my review of Lowriders in Space for my main issues.

Lowriders to the Center of the Earth is a little better (not regarding the use of Spanglish) in naturally incorporating Hispanic culture and folklore into the story (the Coyote, La Llorona [even though she's not named as such], Aztec gods) without making it too forced or staged. ( )
