I received a complementary uncorrected proof from the publisher. The vibrant story of a homeless mother & daughter as told through the eyes of the young daughter. Through her adventures in finding treasures, making abandoned buildings feel like home, and dealing with an alcoholic mother, readers are able to grasp an understanding of the basic needs of any child: food, shelter, and love. Surviving in a city with a child and without monetary resources. Find an abandoned building, scavenge for daily necessities, and beg for anything else. Hide so that child services doesn't find you and take away your child. That is the essence of this book. Sad, remorseful, yet full of family love. Recommended for youth struggling for a place to call their own, homelessness, family relationships--especially a mother and daughter, survival in a city. ( )

This book is sad in so many different ways. It shines a spotlight on addiction, parenting on the streets, the relationship between a mother and daughter and how drugs can make someone selfish. No child should live on the streets. I kind of suspected the ending but not until I had about 40 pages to read. Definitely recommend this book. It was such a good story.

I received a copy from Penguin Random House First To Read Program. ( )

A young homeless girl and her mother live in the ruins of an abandoned mill. While the girl stays inside to avoid the authorities, the mother begs for change on the street. While the mother fights addiction, the girl creates her own fantasy life.

I have to admit that I don't really get this book. I couldn't figure out how old the girl was, which really bothered me. Although this book isn't for me, I'm sure there are many out there who will be caught in its flowery language and dream like quality. ( )

The Girl In Between by Sarah Carroll is the kind of story that stays with you. The young main character and the protective emotions the writing elicits; the fact that it takes on the very serious issue of being homeless; the fact that the book stresses the universality of this story by not naming its characters; and the fact of a seemingly abrupt ending are all reminders of a harsh reality and the makings of a memorable book.
