I love JaNay Brown-Wood's books and this one is very wonderful. In this counting book, a large family gathers for a party at grandmas. The party includes one grandma, two turkeys, three neighbors (who come bearing "FOUR pots of hot greens and ham hocks")...all the way to fifteen grandkids. Needless to say, it's get really crowded at Grandma's house. And I love that the solution came from a grandkid ! The illustrations by Priscilla Burris are lively, cute, and charming ( )

A girl is talking about her grandmas tiny house and wondering how all the family and friends are going to fit in it to eat. THey solve the problem by moving to the big backyard for their feast. It also has counting and rhyming. ( )

* Book prominently features diverse characters: Yes, an African American grandmother and her very large family, plus a few ethnically diverse friends.
* Book would work for a preschooler storytime: a bit long for the wiggly toddlers, would work better with preschoolers. There are only a couple lines per page and the pictures are large and countable, if you want to add in some interactiveness.
* Works well with the counting theme: yes, with a story that provides added interest. ( )

A counting book, and so much more: a book about family and community togetherness, sharing a wonderful meal, and thinking outside the box when the box (house) is too small. Perfect for storytime or one-on-one.
