Biography & Autobiography. History. Women's Studies. Nonfiction. HTML:

Based on Mackenzi Lee's popular weekly Twitter series of the same name, Bygone Badass Broads features 52 remarkable and forgotten trailblazing women from all over the world. With tales of heroism and cunning, in-depth bios and witty storytelling, Bygone Badass Broads gives new life to these historic female pioneers. Starting in the fifth century BC and continuing to the present, the book takes a closer look at bold and inspiring women who dared to step outside the traditional gender roles of their time. Coupled with riveting illustrations and Lee's humorous and conversational storytelling style, this book is an outright celebration of the badass women who paved the way for the rest of us.

This was cute! The stories were interesting and the art made it a beautiful addition to envisioning these women. So many are lost to history and I'm embarrassed to say I only knew 8 or so of the women written about, and so Mackenzie Lee writing this book as a gap to the absolute void of good historical stories about women is awesome in my book. The hipness of the writing did though me off in the beginning, and sometimes I think it was bit too informal (there were one or two references in there that are already dated, and as someone mentioned in another review the AAVE was... awkward) but overall the book was a treat :") I see how great this would be for middle grade readers and can't wait to try and get my sister to read it. I loved this so much! Most of these women I didn't know and the author tells their stories in a breezy, feminist style. And the illustrations of each are so gorgeous! ( )

The style of writing was super corny, trying too hard to be relevant for the time. (There has to be a way to present history that is a happy medium between this style and the very dry tone of a textbook) There were also noticeable editing errors. The subject matter was what saved it - these stories were so interesting and there were so many women I have never heard of, which is a shame. So kudos to the author for bringing them to light. ( )

I enjoyed learning about these women some of who I probably would have never learned about, but the writing wasn't my favorite. It felt like it was trying too hard to be modern and funny when I rather it had been neither and just be natural. ( )
