Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. HTML:

Twelve-year-old Manuel leaves his small town in Mexico to join his older brother in Los Angeles. To cross the US border, he must become a "beast rider"??someone who hops on a train. The first time he tries, he is stopped by the Mexican police, who arrest and beat him. When he tries again, he is attacked by a Mexican gang and left for dead. Just when Manuel is ready to turn back, he finds new hope. Villagers clothe and feed him, help him find work, and eventually boost him back onto the train. When he finally arrives in LA and is reunited with his brother, he is elated. But the longer he's there, the more he realizes that something isn't right. The train to freedom and a better life has been named “The Beast” because it is a dangerous ride and many never make it alive. Will Manuel make it to join his brother in “The City of Angels”? Share it his hope and fear as Manuel takes on “La Bestia”.
The authors create an authentic, character driven story of the hope and tragedy of trying to cross the border for a chance at a better life. This action- packed story full of hope and tragedy will appeal readers in grades 5-7. It would also be a great class read aloud as it opens up discussion about illegal immigration and why people are willing to risk so much for a chance at a better life. This tale is told in first person from the perspective of a twelve-year-old boy traveling alone. ( )

RGG: Poetic representation of the violence of the cross-border journey and the stress of the undocumented experience. The rationale of the journey is a little vague, especially when Manuel decides to return home. Reading interest: 11-13.
