Septology I-II follows the lives of two men living close to each other on the west coast of Norway. The year is coming to a close and Asle, an ageing painter and widower, is reminiscing about his life. He lives alone, his only friends being his neighbour, Åsleik, a bachelor and traditional Norwegian fisherman-farmer, and Beyer, a gallerist who lives in Bjørgvin, a couple hours' drive south of Dylgja, where he lives. There, in Bjørgvin, lives another Asle, also a painter. He and the narrator are doppelgangers - two versions of the same person, two versions of the same life. Written in hypnotic prose that shifts between the first and third person, Septology calls into question concrete notions around subjectivity and the self. What makes us who we are? And why do we lead one life and not another? Through flashbacks, Fosse deftly explores the convergences and divergences in the lives of both Asles, slowly building towards a decisive encounter between them both. A writer at the zenith of his career, with Septology Fosse presents us with an indelible and poignant exploration of the human condition that will endure as his masterpiece.… (mais)

Skriven helt utan punkt. ( )

Reason read: This author was the 1923 Nobel Literature Award winner. I read this one mostly on a whim because it was available and it was a shared read for TIOLI. This one is the first two parts of seven parts. Jon Fosse is Norwegian and this book very much had a Norwegian feel. It is SOC and reminded me of Virginia Woolf but it also could be compared to Bernard, Beckett, Kafka, Faulkner. Subject/themes are life, death, light, God, art. The main character is an artist. I guess this is written as one long sentence so I am glad I listened to it. There are two Asles, both are painters, one lives in one town and drinks everyday and is an alcoholic. The other lives in the country and he has quit drinking. Not sure what is being attempted here. Is it looking at two possible outcomes? There is also a strong feeling of dread as you read it. I am glad I read it. It was an interesting read and I would consider reading the rest of the Septology. ( )
