A delightful, old-fashioned love story with a uniquely twenty-first-century twist, Landing is a romantic comedy that explores the pleasures and sorrows of long-distance relationships-the kind millions of us now maintain mostly by plane, phone, and Internet. Sile is a stylish citizen of the new Dublin, a veteran flight attendant who's traveled the world. Jude is a twenty-five-year-old archivist, stubbornly attached to the tiny town of Ireland, Ontario, in which she was born and raised. On her first plane trip, Jude's and Sile's worlds touch and snag at Heathrow Airport. In the course of the next year, their lives, and those of their friends and families, will be drawn into a new, shaky orbit. This sparkling, lively story explores age-old questions: Does where you live matter more than who you live with? What would you give up for love, and would you be a fool to do so?… (mais)

not just a GAY love story but a gay LOVE story. oh, my heart, this was fantastic. also, incredible wrt the problems inherent in long distance relationships, especially those strongly dependent on technology. READ IT. ( )

For some reason, I was convinced this was a collection of short stories. Much to my surprise, it was the kind of story I was looking to read.

Also really loved how the LGBT relationships were just relationships.

I also have the fantasy of living in a small town, earning enough to get by, not wanting for much. ( )

between 3 and 3.5 stars. this was a sweet read although i have to admit that most of the time i was reading, i didn't want them to end up together in the end; i thought it actually would have been more realistic if they didn't. they were just so tied to their geographies and i didn't see either of them working out in the other's locale. by the end, i was glad they ended up together, and i thought the toronto compromise when it first arose would have been a solid solution, so it was nice to see her go back to it. at least as a possibility. the dialogue was fun and crisp and kept me engaged. it was also smart, with the historical and archival framework and the interweaving of folktales and family lore, plus all the intellectual references. i liked that donoghue assumed the reader would understand, even when i didn't always. the characters are fun, the locations interesting, the secondary characters/friends well written, and (again) the dialogue was snappy and often funny. she's a good writer, and this was satisfying. i need to read more by her, for sure.

(it's not her fault but the cover image should have an obviously brown arm, not one white arm and one slightly less white arm.)

a quote from pascal that seems apropos right now:

"The sole cause of man's unhappiness is that he does not know how to stay quietly in his room. -- Pascal; Pensees" ( )
