It's a thought-provoking memoir, I'll give it that. The first several chapters had me a bit underwhelmed, as they each painted a simple picture before ending on some sort of "BUT THERE WAS DOOM ON THE HORIZON..." foreshadowing sentence. Eventually the pattern did break, but by then I was having difficulty not gaping in horror at most of what I was reading. Like, was there not on unproblematic person in this child's life? And then when the damage from that began to manifest in her own self-sabotaging moments, there was less shock and more a sense of sinking inevitability. I truly hope the author's childhood through young adult life had more positive moments than were portrayed in this memoir. ( )
