"An unforgettable debut novel from an award-winning writer: a lively, daring ghost story about a dead teen girl who falls in love with a female writer who has no idea she exists. In 1473, fourteen-year-old Blanca dies in childbirth in a hilltop monastery in Mallorca. Nearly four hundred years later, when George Sand, her two children, and her lover Frederic Chopin arrive in the village, Blanca is still there: a spirited, funny, righteous ghost, she's been hanging around the monastery since her accidental death, spying on the monks and the townspeople and keeping track of her descendants. Blanca is enchanted the moment she sees George, and the magical novel unfolds as a story of deeply felt, unrequited longing-the impossible love of a teenage ghost for a woman who can't see her and doesn't know she exists. As George and Chopin, who wear their unconventionality, in George's case, literally on their sleeves, find themselves in deepening trouble with the provincial, 19th-century villagers, Blanca watches helplessly and reflects on the circumstances of her own death (which involves an ill-advised love affair with a monk-in-training). Charming, original, and emotionally moving, this is a surprisingly touching story about romantic fixation and a powerful meditation on creativity"--… (mais)

Like Casper the ghost meets 100 Years of Solitude.
Lovely writing, quiet but emotional story. Lots of bi characters, both dead and alive. ( )

The most beautiful ghost story I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. ❤️ ( )

The ghost of a teenage girl who died in the 15th century observes George Sand and Frederick Chopin as they live in Spain to try to improve Chopin's health. The concept is really interesting, but I couldn't get into the book. I found the ghost to be a frustrating character: nothing about her felt particularly medieval. A quarter of the way into the book, I could find absolutely no relationship between her life story and the story of the people she was observing. So much has already been written about Sand and Chopin, and I didn't find their stories to be particularly compelling either. Writing historical fiction about real people is always a risky undertaking. ( )

a sweet and sometimes sad ghost story. i don’t often read historical fiction inspired by real people, but this book may have changed my mind on that. the author gave chopin and sand a second chance to breathe and love. and i enjoyed every page of it. this book shines in its details and pauses to contemplate existence. it looks death in the face and embraces it. In this high concept novel, Blanca, the 400 year old ghost of a teenage girl, falls in love with French author George Sand, who is in turn involved in a complicated relationship with dying composer Frédéric Chopin. Their fraught household also includes Sand's son Maurice and daughter Solange. Blanca is able to read the thoughts and memories of the other characters, but they are completely unaware of her existence. Blanca can try to influence, but cannot change, their fates.

I found this novel inventive and beautifully observed. I highly recommend it. ( )
