It's the Dark family vs. the Penhallows in this daring and witty, sarcastic and sentimental novel by the author of Anne of Green Gables.

What Will Two Feuding Families Do To Win?

It all begins with Great Aunt Becky and her infamous prized possession: a legendary heirloom jug. After her death, everyone wants it. But the new owner won't be named for one year...

Anything It Takes

Mayhem reigns and tables are turned in a year when everything feels topsy-turvy. One woman will lose her fiancé. Two enemies since childhood will inexplicably come together. And a couple mysteriously separated on their wedding night ten years before will find a second chance at love. Then comes the night when Aunt Becky's wishes will be revealed...and the family is in for the biggest surprise of all.

What Readers are Saying:

"Next to Anne of Green Gables, [it's] one of the books I've re-read the most times. I've always loved this and considered it the best of Montgomery's standalone books."

"Superb. Absolutely superb. The characters live and step right off the page, leaving me thinking about them after I've closed the book."

"Classic L.M. Montgomery. Lots of fun characters doing crazy things and then gossiping about it to anyone who will listen. Loved it!"

I like this book. Still, it has always been a contender for my least favorite book by my favorite author. And oh, that last line. It did not age well.

Still, on my latest reading of the novel I realized something: this would make a great TV mini-series. Think Downton Abbey style where a large cast of characters have their interweaving stories told. The series format would give the story time to unfold and seeing the characters visually would help distinguish all of them. Many of the descriptions which seem tedious when described would come across beautifully as part of the appearance and behavior of a character. The novel stays with each character briefly enough that not a lot of depth would be lost by the format change.

Elaborate period pieces are popular these days. So pretty please universe? 🙂 ( )

The book is set in the....1920s, I think? Lots of things happened to a clan as they fought to win inheritance of a heirloom jug over the course of a year. Lots of characters in the book, because it's a big clan. Lots of storylines. I like the romantic storylines the best. Several focused on how romantic love can be enduring in some cases but fickle in others. I hope the couples that got together live happily ever after! The book is interspersed with many passages describing beautiful scenery in the coastal town where the clan lived. The two large clan gatherings over the jug, one at the beginning of the book and one at the end of the book, were also fun to read. There is an n word at the very end of the book, spoken by a roughhouse character. Members of the clan also demonstrated very conservative (and I think the author meant to present as endearing but ridiculous) attitude about things like pajamas (they think nightgown is the way to go) and skirts that showed women's legs. L.M. Montgomery is a long time and all time favorite author of mine. She writes the perfect girls story with just the right mix of adventure, drama and happiness. I find her books a comfort to read and have re-read most of her works many times over the years. They are classics for a reason and that reason is they are great. These are true comfort books for me and books I enjoy re-reading again and again. ( )

I was thrilled to learn that L.M. Montgomery wrote other books besides the Anne of Green Gables series. This is probably one of my favourites of hers, right up there with "The Blue Castle." ( )

I liked this a lot. There were some characters I wish there had been more depth on, like Brian, but overall I liked the range of characters. I could have done without the last chapter, however; the Sams were my least favorite pair (in terms of their reconciliation) and the last paragraph left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Overall, though, I really liked it! ( )
