This novel looks at the murder? assassination? of the Successor--the second in power--in Albania, during the communist years. Few names are named. There is his wife, his daughter, her fiance, the Guide, the Architect, and so forth. Based on the death of Mehmet Shehu in 1981.

This was interesting, but slow and a bit dull. ( )

Pour les mauvaises langues, j’ai bien retrouvé Le Successeur de Ismail Kadaré dans ma PAL. Il s’agit donc du deuxième tome du diptyque constitué de La fille d’Agamemnon (dont j’ai parlé dans ce billet) et Le Successeur (dont je parle dans ce billet donc). La fille d’Agamemnon a été écrit vingt ans avant Le Successeur, mais celui-ci reste bien la suite directe du premier tome.

En mai, le narrateur et Suzana venaient de se quitter, suite à l’annonce des fiançailles de Suzana avec un homme susceptible de ne pas faire de tort à la carrière de son père, futur successeur de Enver Hodja (le dictateur albanais). On se retrouve ici en décembre, le successeur vient de se suicider, suite à une réunion au sommet de l’État où le dictateur dirigeant le pays devait lui annoncer quel serait son sort, après une période d’incertitudes qui durait depuis septembre, depuis exactement la cérémonie de fiançailles de Suzana. La réunion a dû être abrégée, car la journée se finissait et la sanction devait tomber le lendemain. On suppose que le successeur a voulu s’épargner l’annonce de sa déchéance et s’est donc suicidé.

Bien sûr, le narrateur de premier tome est hors jeu. Ici, Kadaré ne choisit pas un narrateur, mais raconte l’histoire du point de tous les protagonistes, sauf du successeur (puisqu’il est mort). On a ainsi connaissance de l’avis de Suzana, de son frère et de la mère (par ouï-dire), mais aussi du dictateur, du nouveau successeur, de l’architecte de la maison. On peut aussi lire les bruits de couloir qui font penser que le successeur ne s’est pas vraiment suicidé, mais qu’il aurait été assassiné, notamment parce qu’il avait une plus belle maison que le Chef.

Au lieu de concentrer son intrigue temporellement sur le mois de décembre, l’auteur fait durer le roman sur une année où on voit comment va évoluer l’ambiance à la tête du pays. Au début, les rumeurs courent, tout le monde parle (plutôt chuchote) du sujet à des personnes de confiance (si on peut en trouver). Puis, la situation change doucement : on en parle moins en public, mais on continue d’en parler dans les foyers, on s’interroge jusqu’à soupçonner tout le monde. Passer la stupeur du public, mais aussi des personnes introduites, l’ambiance devient lourde, on attend tous (le lecteur aussi) que le Dictateur intervienne, mais il ne se passe rien. On laisse courir le bruit que l’assassin aurait pu passer par la maison du Chef, mais celui-ci ne dément ni ne confirme. On ne sait pas, personne ne sait, sauf Kadaré (et nous à la fin du livre).

On revient aussi en arrière pour comprendre comment, entre septembre et décembre, le Successeur a pu chuter, jusqu’à la mort. On voit que cela peut aller très vite, que ce n’est dû qu’à la volonté, voire l’humeur, du Dictateur. C’est quelque chose que l’on sait par les livres d’Histoire, par les documentaires télévisés, mais je trouve toujours percutant de le lire dans un roman. On comprend mieux la manière où dans les dictatures, il n’y avait (et il n’y a toujours) pas de certitudes, des personnes qui disparaissaient (et disparaissent toujours) alors qu’elles étaient (et sont) encensées le jour d’avant. La dimension temporelle est mieux illustrée dans un roman : on a le temps de s’attacher, de vivre une situation avant que celle-ci ne change complètement. Dans les documentaires (livres ou télévisés), cela ne reste qu’un fait impersonnel.

Ce qui m’a fasciné dans ce livre, c’est la capacité de Kadaré de nous mettre dans la tête de tous les personnages, d’arriver à nous faire penser comme eux, de ressentir leurs peurs, leurs incertitudes et leurs questionnements. C’est assez formidable, car le livre reste court (220 pages), mais l’auteur fait ce qu’il avait fait pour un personnage dans La fille d’Agamemnon, pour plusieurs personnages aussi différents. L’écriture reste gracile, sans lourdeurs pour passer d’un personnage à l’autre. C’est assez formidable.

Les deux romans forment un diptyque, sont sur le même sujet, dénonce plus ou moins la même chose, l’Albanie communiste, mais sont totalement différents. Est-ce que c’est dû au fait qu’ils ont vingt ans d’écart ? Au fait que l’auteur a changé sa manière de raconter des histoires ? Ou bien au fait que Kadaré sait écrire des romans toujours différents ? Cela me donne envie de continuer à découvrir Kadaré, pour pouvoir répondre à mes questions. ( )

It was the announced pasing of Kim Jong Il that prompted my reading, a belated one of sorts as I've always found a welcome tumult in Kadare's novels. The jutapoisiton with North Korea is functional in as I know so little about its shadowed pratices. Perhaps that is the point. This is a remarkable tale, one which seethes and whsipers leaving the reader shuddering at political reality and swooning in the wake of such sweet prose. ( )

The impact and causes of the murder/suicide of the successor to a totalitarian leader. Didn't really do anything for me, a new author I was very happy to come across. ( )

Typical treatise dealing with the subtle workings of power and fear in a communist dictatorship like Albania. So why only three stars for this Nobel Prize winner? It is not for want of insight. Because Kadare knows his stuff. It is the style of writing which is a combination of a narrator telling a lengthy story and a southern European style of writing, which I would characterise as terse, wieldy, lacking in immediacy. The idea and plot of this novel is very good. The ordained successor to the ailing dictator is found dead at his palatial home. Was he killed in cold blood? Did he step out of line? Or did he commit suicide (the initial official reading)? And if so why, because rumour has it that he was on the verge of being rehabilitated. ( )

He took the view that crimes moved house with people, until they found walls within which they could hide.
The nature of such a bond was presumably still little understood, because it was too new. Unlike religious allegiances, it was in competition with the ties of clan and family, because it too was a tie of blood - but with a difference. It wasn't based on inner blood, the blood in your veins, identical to the blood of your family going back a thousand years, according to genetics, but on the other kind, on outer blood. That's to say, on the blood of others, blood they had drunkenly spilled in the name of Doctrine.
Where, as on some station platform or in an airport arrivals hall, the dead by the thousands stand around in little groups waiting for their nearest and dearest. Some are overwhelmed with longing to clasp in their arms those from whom they have been separated, but there are others who with sombre and resentful visage display their wounds, waiting for an explanation.
In past times, nobody ever felt certain of anything. You thought you were as white as snow, and then, without even knowing what you had done, you found you had been subjected to foreign influences. Or that you had been contaminated despite yourself by the wind of liberalism. It wasn't by chance they called them winds of ill fortune - you could get caught out by a diabolical draught anywhere you stood.
