I've always been a fan of this story, and part of the reason is its simplicity. Even with the supernatural horror, this is -- similar to The Mist -- really about the horrors of humanity. How people turn on each other when the power goes out and lives are lost.

It also has one of the most devastating endings of King's work. Not only the level of Cujo or Pet Sematary, but not far off, either. ( )

Quando mia madre al ritorno dal supermercato mi ha portato questo "nuovo" libro di Stephen King mi sono messa a saltellare dalla gioia e non ho potuto aspettare neanche un secondo, mi sono subito buttata sulla lettura! Devo ammettere che la scelta di utilizzare una sceneggiatura non mi ha subito convinto, non che non sia abituata a leggerne (anzi) ma l'idea di riuscire a concentrare tutta la tensione, la suspense e l'abile tecnica di King in misere battute mi sembrava quasi un'utopia. Ho iniziato quindi la lettura con gioia ma anche con il timore di ritrovarmi a leggere un libro noioso e pesante oppure la classica buona idea sprecata perché non ben sviluppata ma come spesso mi succede nella vita mi sbagliavo! DI GROSSO!!!
Il narratore della storia è Mike Anderson il quale ci racconta la vicenda avvenuta sull'isola (immaginaria, al largo delle coste del Maine) Little Tall nei lontani giorni in cui sull'isola si è scatenata una fortissima tempesta, così forte da essere definita la tempesta del secolo. Quell'anno mentre gli abitanti si preparavano per fronteggiare la calamità naturale che li avrebbe colpiti un'altra calamità più oscura e terrificante si stava preparando a sconvolgere per sempre gli equilibri della piccola cittadina. Il misterioso Linoge compare misteriosamente sulla tranquilla isola portando la morte, seminando il panico e costringendo la comunità a fare i conti con segreti taciuti negli anni e una terribile scelta destinata a cambiare per sempre la vita di tutti
La scelta della sceneggiatura riesce perfettamente a presentarci molteplici personaggi tutti diversissimi tra loro, ci permette di conoscerli e apprezzarli e perché no talvolta trovarli odiosi (impossibile non odiare Robbie Beals! Almeno per me).
La trama è originale e la vicenda narrata ben presto arriva al sodo, in poco tempo ci ritroviamo faccia a faccia con il crudele Linoge ed è impossibile non immedesimarsi, la scelta di strutturare il racconto sotto forma di sceneggiatura rende ancora più viva la vicenda, i dialoghi scorrono rapidi così come gli avvenimenti e veniamo risucchiati nella storia, vogliamo sapere e capire proprio come i protagonisti, vogliamo sapere chi sia Linoge e cosa voglia, quale piano diabolico ha in mente, perché uccide... mi è stato impossibile smettere di leggere, sono riuscita infatti a "divorare" il volume in neanche 24 ore cosa assai rara per un libro di King (che solitamente assaporo piano piano) Inoltre ritrovarci nuovamente sull'isoletta di Little Tall, la stessa isola in cui era ambientata la storia di Dolores Claiborne è un'emozione e se a questo aggiungiamo una bella trama, una sceneggiatura avvincente e lo stile inconfondibile del re posso solo dire che questo libro deve essere letto! Se siete fan di Stephen King e cercate qualcosa di diverso dal solito "La tempesta del secolo" fa sicuramente al caso vostro e con la lettura potrete anche vedere la serie tv di 3 puntate uscita nel 1999 che riesce sullo schermo perfettamente a creare la giusta atmosfera voluta da Stephen King. A small island off the coast of Maine, Little Tall Island, is expecting a very bad winter storm. Before the storm actually starts hitting, a man enters the home of an old lady and kills her, then sits in her rocking chair watching TV.
A young boy is walking by the home and sees the front door open. He proceeds to enter the home and makes the discovery. He runs and informs the authorities about it.
The storm of the century is proceeding and other nasty things take place while the islanders are trying to prepare and protect themselves from the ravages, not just from the storm.
This is written as a screenplay and it is really neat to envision the things taking place.

I am a huge Stephen King fan, just don't know that this is one of my favorites. There is a lot of violence and not a lot of understanding of why that is happening. ( )

Andre Linoge has come to Little Tall Island just as the fiercest winter storm in recorded history is about to hit. After murdering one of the residents, Linoge waits calmly to be taken into police custody by Constable Mike Anderson. But once in his cell he tells the townsfolk, "If you give me what I want, I'll go away." Then things start to happen, secrets are revealed and more people die, and suddenly the citizens of Long Tall Island are ready to agree to Linoge's proposition even before they know exactly what it is he wants. What he wants is much more than they bargined for.

The ending was a complete shock. I was expecting all the townspeople to get rid of the villian somehow but they didn't and that made it more real because more often than not evil does triumph and that my friends is reality. It wasn't like a horror story either, it was more like a nightmare, the kind of thing that if it happened would be your worst fears become reality. I recommend this book to anyone who doesn't mind being scared, at least once and a while.
