This book is about the history of Confucius and his value of honesty. Confucius's father believed he would grow up one day to be wise and honest. When his father passed on, he wanted to become the man his father believed he would become. This book uses a little owl named Sage to represent the inner voice of Confucius. This inner voice would remind Confucius growing up the importance of honesty. Confucius listened to his inner voice and when something bad happened, the people who trusted him came to his rescue. This book explains Confucius's purpose in life and his teachings of honesty. This book also explains how he was from China and his importance in history.
Personal Reaction:
I really liked this book. I am not much of a history reader, however I really liked the way this book was written. I like the way the book portrays history while also teaching the value of honesty. Its like two lessons in one. The history of Confucius and his teachings of honesty. Its truly a good book to have on hand as an educator. I also like the way this book applies to children in a very practical way.
Extension Ideas:
1. Have the class write in a journal at least two to three things they learned from this book.
2. Discuss as a class the history of Confucius and his teachings of honesty.
3. Have the class divide into groups and discuss why they feel its important to be honest and how it relates to Confucius, then discuss as a class.
