My copy contains three stories: The Yellow Mask, Sister Rose, and The Stolen Letter.
The first is a romance between an Italian nobleman and a poor working girl in Pisa, kept apart by a fervent priest who wishes to recover property for the church which he considers to have been stolen by the young man's ancestors. The second is a tale of the French Revolution and especially the Terror, and the last tells how a country lawyer had his first professional success saving his friend from a blackmailer. The link between the stories is the narrator, Mr Kerby, who hears the stories from people whose portraits he paints.
The most vivid is the one set during the French Revolution, but I could have wished for the heroine to be less fragile. ( )

I recall reading this on a miserably wet evening in an English restaurant near Heathrow. Oddly enough, I don't recall the stories. ( )
