I had originally picked this to review for a Children's Services poetry assignment, but decided it was a little too deep / dark for Pre-K - Grade 6. This is a wonderful adaptation of Dante's Inferno, with Aesop as a guide through 13 rings of hell (rather than the full 34). The young hero crosses paths with some unsavory characters and some dark issues, all while working his way through the struggle of good vs. evil. I particularly liked how Agard used modern references in place of the original, but did keep some of Dante's characters in place for historical accuracy. The graphic novel format was interesting and didn't distract the reader's attention from the text. It added just enough thought provoking imagery to make the reader stop and study the illustrations before turning the page. ( )
