 It is a riveting story, splendidly told. It is amazing that academic historians have so often written admiringly of Henry VIII while others have portrayed the 16th century as a glorious age. Robert Hutchinson suffers from no such illusions. Tudor England was as cruel and vile as Stalin’s Russia or Hitler’s Germany. It was a place where spies and informers flourished, where men and women were condemned to death on trumped-up evidence in rigged trials where there was only one possible verdict – guilty. The 3rd Duke characteristically explained while dealing with the prisoners taken after the suppression of the Pilgrimage of Grace, that he had dispensed with trials by indictment because some of those charged might have been found not guilty. The king however was angry because Norfolk had neglected to have the corpses quartered. He had previously ordered the duke to kill his prisoners “without pity or respect”.
