With the success of Kinley MacGregor's latest New York Times Expanded and USA Today bestseller A Dark Champion, we are in the perfect position to republish her backlist gem Master of Desire. A Dream of Desire Awakened . . . Beautiful Lady Emily dreams of the rapture of love and the joys of marriage. The youngest daughter of an English lord at war, she is shaken by the arrival of a mysterious stranger to her father's castle. Could this breathtaking man be Emily's yearned-for lover? Indeed, Draven de Montague, Earl of Ravenswood, has come for Emily . . . but romance has nothing to do with it. In the Tender Embrace of an Enemy . . . Draven would never have entered the home of his most hated adversary had not the King himself ordered him to take in his foe's daughter for a year to forge bonds of peace between their two feuding houses. Worse still, here is a lass whose exquisite loveliness could tempt Draven to betray his sworn vow never to let anther close to his heart. Emily knows the searing heat of her passion could burn down the defenses of this proud warrior. But will the surrender of the sweet nectar of his lips and his bold, sensuous caress ignite a blaze so hot it consumes them both?… (mais)

Oh Ick! This book was just such a cookie cutter Highlander romance that I couldn’t keep interested in it.

It started out all right with two men standing before King Henry II, pleading their case against each other. The king, tiring of people on neighboring lands fighting each other all of the time, decides to let Draven of Montague, the fourth earl of Ravenswood take custody of the Hugh’s daughter, Emily. I couldn’t find Hugh’s surname though he was definitely some sort of nobleman who lived in a castle and had lots of land.

As I read on, I even laughed as Emily puts a chicken up to a man’s lips who is trying to force a kiss from her. But I lost interest after Draven goes to collect Emily. Draven is supposed to be a hard-core man with some sort of curse on him which, of course, the author milks the mystery of the curse for all its worth but Draven can’t seem to keep his mind off Emily and it is kind of pathetic. It is like he has never seen a woman before. I couldn’t see what was so different or great about Emily except she was spoiled, bossy and desperate for a husband but Draven couldn’t keep his mind off of her.

When I really lost interest was when Draven and Emily went to a man named Orrick’s home so that Draven could pour over his books because the king suspected him of cheating him and Orrick’s son arrives between two brutes. His son calls the two men who are holding him Fric and Frac instead of Fritz and Frank which were their real names. It would have been hilarious except for the fact that the term “Fric and Frac” didn’t even come into existence until the 1930s when two Swiss skaters joined a comedy tour. The historical accuracy went down the toilet with that remark.

The story really didn’t have much substance to it so I quit reading it at about halfway through.

Definitely a worthy read for historical romance lovers. I enjoyed the development of the characters. Emily is a twenty-something woman who is sheltered by her father. Two of her sisters and her mother have died in childbirth and her father doesn't want to let any of his other daughters go. Due to a feud with Draven he is forced (by the King's order) to give one of his daughter's over to him for a year. This is supposed to ensure that there will be no blood shed between the two lords.

Emily falls in love while Draven is desperate not to. ( )

This author is capable of writing a very entertaining story -- sadly, this isn't one. Mediocre at best, "Master of Desire" is just another cheesy romance. Don't get me wrong, I like cheesy romances. They're usually sweet and fun to read. This one, though, was purely B-rate, and -- since I know the author can do better -- that is unacceptable. ( )
