A well written story with great characters. The historical setting was interesting and added unique details of the Victorian era that were well-woven and advanced the plot instead of distracting. The story eluded to Charles Dickens and indeed, he makes a cameo appearance. The feel of the plot was very Dickensonian, but without the ramblings of Dickens. The mc, Grace, is strong and works hard and things come right for her in the end, though she has to make a tough decision and makes the one that is right for the good of others rather than what might be her own selfish desires. It is a great story with a very satisfying resolution. Haven't read too many of those lately! ( )

Whilst I have read a number of Mary Hooper books, 'Fallen Grace' would not be rated as one of my favourites. Set in the 1800s, Grace and her older, vulnerable sister, Lily, are homeless and without a cent to their names. Having just given birth to a stillborn baby, Grace places the little corpse in a stranger's coffin as she does not want to bury him in a pauper's grave. This leads to a chain of events that she never expected.

All the characters in this book are linked by death - some you care for, others you dislike intensely - and Hooper has provided an interesting insight into the rituals and conventions of Victorian funerals. Sixteen-year-old Grace is a tragic character who is selfless, caring and strong. As the reader follows her day-to-day struggle to survive, as Grace faces one obstacle after another, she remains at all times dignified and gracious. A satisfying read for teenage lovers of history. Not a bad little historical novel. Rich with terrible situations of poverty, lots of very grim dealings of death. It wouldn't be overly interesting but for the fact that it all revolves around funerals. It adds a morbid touch that I'll always fall for.

I definitely enjoyed reading it. It's not a heavy read, nor does it take too long. ( )
