This book is a study of ancient Greek views about 'moral luck'. It examines the fundamental ethical problem that many of the valued constituents of a well-lived life are vulnerable to factors outside a person's control, and asks how this affects our appraisal of persons and their lives. The Greeks made a profound contribution to these questions, yet neither the problems nor the Greek views of them have received the attention they deserve. This book thus recovers a central dimension of Greek thought and addresses major issues in contemporary ethical theory. One of its most original aspects is its interelated treatment of both literary and philosophical texts. In a close analysis of three tragedies, and works by Plato and Aristotle, the author argues that we cannot understand the thought of the philosophers without also investigating its relation to the literary works; and that the literary works, in virtue of their form as well as their content, make a distinctive contribution to ethical thought.… (mais)

In De breekbaarheid van het goede bestudeert Martha Nussbaum verschillende opvattingen over 'moreel geluk' uit de Oudheid. Daarbij gaat ze in op het fundamentele ethische probleem van de weerloosheid van het waardevolle; dat wat de klassieke filosofen als grondleggend beschouwen voor een goed en gelukkig leven blijkt vaak kwetsbaar voor onbeheersbare invloeden van buitenaf.

Een geslaagd of gelukkig leven is, door binding aan anderen, hindernissen van feitelijke omstandigheden en de eigen passies, afhankelijk van zaken die buiten onze controle liggen. Nussbaum onderzoekt hoe in de oud-Griekse filosofie op dit gegeven wordt gereageerd. Ze onderscheidt twee strategieen om met deze kwetsbaarheid om te gaan. De eerste gaat uit van Plato en probeert het toeval zo veel mogelijk te controleren zodat het leven niet langer speelbal is van externe en interne factoren. De tweede strategie komt van Aristoteles. Zijn aanbeveling is om te accepteren wat ons kwetsbaar maakt en geluk niet te vergeestelijken, maar rekening te houden met het feit dat we een lichaam hebben. Een subliem boek; bevlogen geschreven; uitzonderlijk vanwege de geslaagde combinatie van filosofie en literatuur. Ook toegankelijk voor beginners in de filosofie. Met eindnoten, literatuuropgave en register.

If you are a reader of Greek tragedy, you will enjoy this book about ethics and luck. Ms. Nussbaum is a wonderful writer, and even you have never read a Greek tradgedy she will enrapture you to do so. (
