The "evilution" of Charles Addams's singularly eccentric family began long before the television and film interpretations made them icons of American popular culture. Addams first created Morticia, Lurch and The Thing in a cartoon published in a 1938 issue of the New Yorker-though he hadn't named them at the time, or even conceived of a family unit. (When he did name the deadly matriarch, he was inspired by the Yellow Pages listing for "Morticians.") Other characters were born and developed in a multitude of Addams's cartoons over the next twenty-six years, before the cheerfully creepy clan debuted on ABC television in 1964 and later on the big screen, twice, in 1991 and 1993. The Addams Family: An Evilution is the first book to trace The Addams Family history, presenting more than 200 cartoons created by Charles Addams (American, 1912-1988) throughout his prolific career; many have never been published before. Text by H. Kevin Miserocchi, director of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation, offers a revealing chronology of each character's evolution (for instance, did you know that Addams originally named Pugsley "Pubert"?), while Addams's own incisive character descriptions, originally penned for the benefit of the television show producers, introduce each chapter. As the presence of the Family continues to permeate generation after generation, and in celebration of the Broadway musical debuting in 2010, this book reminds us where these oddly lovable characters came from and, in doing so, offers a lasting tribute to one of America's greatest humorists. A phenomenon of rare proportion, The Addams Family is the manifestation of one artist's dark but irresistible wit, expressed with an uncommonly deft hand.… (mais)

The Addams Family Evilution is the definitive Addams family collection featuring cartoons published and even some unpublished from the New Yorker magazine, chronicling each character's unique, macabre, and hilarious personality.

As a big Addams Family fan and fan of Charles Addams, this book is a gem. ( )

Delightful history - this is the perfect archive, authorized by the artists' estate, to delve into the origins and backstory of the Addams Family. Mostly cartoons (of course) but a good deal of text explaining the characters, written by Addams for the producers of the Filmways TV show in the 60's. ( )

This was interesting. Here is a compilation of the Addams Family cartoons spanning several decades. I love Morticia. I'm definitely a fan of the Addams family. Some of the cartoons in here I actually didn't understand. I realized you really need to look at the background to see the joke in a lot of these but even then I sometimes didn't get it.

It's interesting to note Gomez in the cartoons is not the suave Gomez of the TV show or the movies. I personally like the Gomez in the TV show better than the Gomez depicted here but that's also what I'm used to.

The dark humor is great. Loved their mini pet dragon. Reminded me so much of the leash-trained iguanas I've owned in the past. I finished this last night and it's a good thing that we didn't have a vase of roses on the table or I would have had the urge to snip the rosebuds off.

Duh duh da duh (snap, snap)

This fascinating book gives the history of the Addams family, from their conception in the imagination of Charles Addams through their development in the cartoons and on through to the television series and movies. It tells how Charles Addams envisioned them, and how they were changed to suit the various media adaptions. Included in the book are both published and previously unpublished cartoons. If you have ever enjoyed the drawings in their original form or snapped your fingers along with the TV series theme song, this is a book that you will enjoy from beginning to end. ( )

The Addams Family: An Evilution collects most of Charles Addams' cartoons of the family complete with histories on each character. The editors of this volume arranged it by family member, with Addams' short character descriptions written for the 1964-66 television series leading each section followed by a longer examination of the character's history in the cartoons, television, and film. These histories are a nice touch, but Addams' cartoons are the best part of this volume. His wit and humor continue to delight as he invites readers to share the joy of schadenfreude. The inclusion of previously-unpublished cartoons make this a must-have for fans of the Addams Family! ( )
