Adventurous fifteen year old Kate Shelley loved the railroad. She knew the train schedules by because they passed Honey Creek, which near her Iowa home. When a horrible storm begins she is hopes that trains will not be traveling in the weather. Unfortunately, trains are running and one goes down the Honey Creek Bridge. Despite her mother's worries and the storm Kate goes to help the people of the train. Becuse of her human life was saved this night. After a three month period of exhaustion and sickness from that night she was presented many honors from the state of Iowa for her bravery. This story is about helping others and courage. I would like to share this story during a theme study of bravery. I think that kids would be wowed by these events, especially since the heroine was a fifteen year old girl. ( )

This would be a great book to share with a class just to show them how some people go out of their way to help others. It would be inspiring to older students being that Kate Shelly was just a teenager when she did this. It also shows how different life was back in the 1800s. ( )
