This book is a children’s history book about Clara Barton. I like it because it is a war book and I am interested in history. The reading grade levels should be for third graders through sixth graders.

This book is about the life of Clara Barton and her early years and why she became a battlefield nurse. This book is good for younger readers but would be good to reference when learning about the civil war.

Summary:
Clara Barton was born in 1821 on Christmas. She was the youngest child with two other sisters and two brothers also. She liked to listen to her dad's stories about being a soldier on the frontier. She loved geography in school and loved taking care of people after taking care of her brothers. She was a teacher for 18 years and then later moved to Washington D.C. and became the first female clerk in the U.S. Patent Office. She memorialized military maps and helped soldiers on both sides. She had the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield." She was asked by President Lincoln to help find a group of missing soldiers. She also helped during the Franco Prussian War. She started the Red Cross in 1881 but died in 1912.

Personal Reaction:
I really liked this book because I never really knew anything about Clara Barton. I liked that she seemed so selfless and always helping others.

Classroom Extension:
1. This would make a great project about what Red Cross does.
2. This would be a great lesson on being selfless.

Summary:
Young Clara Barton is a book that tells us all about herself. She was born in Massachusetts and had two older sisters and two older brothers. She was shy, but loved to help people. She helped people all her life. She helped her brother get better, helped soldiers who were fighting in the war get better, and she helped the president find missing soldiers. She also helped get the Red Cross to America.

Personal Reaction:
This was a good stort and I think it would be very easy for younger students to understand and appreciate. Clara makes me think of my husband who is always wanting to help everyone, no matter what it might be with he wants to help.

Classroom Extensions:
1.) Go on a field trip to visit the closest Red Cross and learn all about it.
2.) Help the Red Cross raise money by having a class fundraiser.
