I find that I cannot rate this one. While it was mostly factually correct and well written, I think I am too close to this one. The details of this story are graphic and not easy to read. This was a horrible crime. I could not get sweet little Tori’s face out of my mind all throughout and another piece of my heart broke reading how her life ended, how scared she must have been.
I remember this case all too well. I remember the local papers graphically telling of the story and the effect it had on Woodstock and the whole province and nation.
Yes, McClintic has a rough upbringing but if any of this telling her sob story was supposed to make me sympathetic, it has the opposite affect on me and convinced me even more that she belongs in maximum security for her entire sentence. There is no excusing this. Lots of people have crappy childhoods. Lots of people don’t go around killing innocent young girls. This same person who supposedly told the whole truth about Rafferty’s involvement to “save another young girl the same fate” was the same person who took Tori in the first place knowing at least part of what would happen to her and also had numerous chances to stop it, let Tori go and put an end to it and in fact did not. Even in prison, she tried to kill a fellow inmate. And let’s not forget microwaving her dog.
And Raffetry? He has a totally clean sheet, opposite McClintic’s lengthy record. She can pretend that she didn’t encourage any of it but I don’t buy that and neither does most of the country. It also makes me very curious what Rafferty has done that has not come to light. It’s a big leap to where he ended up.
Reading McClintic’s story convinced me even more that she should remain in maximum security and not be in the minimum security “healing lodge” she is presently in, that hopefully with the help of the protest November 2 in Ottawa, that decision will be reversed and Tori’s law passed.

This book was a "just the facts ma'am" kind of story. You don't get a lot of digging into the psychology of Dr. Turner, which I think would have increased the value of the book. For a short read though it was a great little book. I would recommend this series for people who are interested in the historical precedent setting cases in Canada. I would further recommend this book for individuals who want to dig into the progress of child welfare and the failures of those systems through out the world. Finally I would recommend this series for people like myself who besides having an interest in abnormal psychology, are frequently looking for new cases to study.… (mais)
